The first professional photography studio in the U.S. was opened in 1840
in New York by Alexander S Wolcott and John Johnson. Photography
studios of this era catered to the elite, who were fascinated by the
ability to have their likeness created in minutes as opposed to the
hours or even days it took a painter.
